Why did you choose to study at UTS:INSEARCH as opposed to other institutions?

I chose to study at UTS:INSEARCH because it is different to other university pathway providers. It gives students the second chance to go directly to their second year of studies in UTS. This is a real advantage as it feels like we’re not wasting any time at all and are able to catch up with our peers who got directly into UTS. I always knew that I wanted to study at UTS as their Communications course is renowned and UTS:INSEARCH gave me the opportunity to achieve this goal.

What do you like about UTS:INSEARCH?

I like that in UTS:INSEARCH the classes are small which allows for in-depth and interactive discussion with my classmates. I find that this is a great way to learn as it allows me to broaden my perspective and listen to good ideas from other students. The teachers at UTS:INSEARCH are also very open and friendly which makes my learning experience a lot easier as I know that I am able to come to them with anything. Furthermore, as the classes are smaller I get to have a lot of one-on-one time with the teachers and receive plenty of support and assistance. UTS:INSEARCH also has the advantage of having a central location within Sydney which makes it very convenient to get to.

Why did you choose to study your course?

I feel that by completing the Diploma of Communications at UTS:INSEARCH, I left myself open to a lot of different options for the future and my career prospects are not limited.

Why did you choose UTS:INSEARCH?

I always knew that I wanted to study Design and while I was still at China, I had the opportunity to attend a UTS workshop about their Design course… I remember coming away from the workshop inspired by the different possibilities in the industry and with the realisation that I still had many things to learn in order to achieve my dream of becoming a designer. At that stage, I knew that I wanted to study Design at UTS and I was advised that UTS:INSEARCH was the best pathway to help me achieve that goal.

How was the overall experience at UTS:INSEARCH for you?

UTS:INSEARCH made me love studying.  The course was very practical, which I loved, and my teachers were helpful as well. I also had the opportunity to meet new people from all over the world that shared my passion - we could spend all day talking about design! In fact, I am still in touch with the friends that I met at UTS:INSEARCH.

How did your time at UTS:INSEARCH help you in your life and studies at UTS?

I found that studying at UTS:INSEARCH really helped prepare me for my studies at UTS. Firstly, the course structure of the Diploma of Design covered similar subjects to UTS and provided me with a strong foundation that enabled me to make a successful transition. I received valuable information on what to expect at university and I learnt skills such as academic writing that I felt gave me an advantage over other international students. I had the opportunity to do many presentations, which taught me how to present well and build up my confidence in my English language skills. This was very helpful, not only in university, but in my job as well, because I have to present my ideas to clients in a way that makes them understand the concept behind my designs.

What does the future hold?

Since I graduated in 2010, I have set up a design studio called Marwils Production and Design with four other work colleagues. I work as a designer and photographer there and we are hoping to expand in the next five years. I intend to stay in Sydney and raise my family here.  If possible, I would like to become a design tutor at UTS:INSEARCH or UTS!

My experience at UTS:INSEARCH has been great, not only have I met a lot of people from lots of different backgrounds, I’ve also learnt a lot from studying at UTS:INSEARCH. I’ll never forget my time here. Everything from the weekly Student Council activities  to the staff members who are willing to help out even after hours, the learning assistance tutorials, which are there to students who are struggling in a particular subject. Classroom sizes are great so you get a lot of one to one feedback from your teachers. Also, peer members are from a broad range of backgrounds, making it a multicultural and diverse institution. Finally, the Academic Advisors who are there to council you when faced with struggles within and outside the institution.

Proudest achievement over the last 12 months?

My proudest achievement so far is actually getting HD’s in most of my subjects this semester. With a great amount of effort and staff members’ persistence and support, I would have never accomplished these marks if I went to any other institution.

Why did you choose to study in Australia?

After enquiring at several educational agencies and talking to people back in my country, it seemed that Australia was the country that offered the most opportunities for overseas students. Upon arriving in Australia, I found that to be true. Personally, I liked Australia’s education system, culture and the fact that Sydney has a multicultural society.

Did you face any challenges while studying at UTS?

I faced several challenges whilst studying at UTS; the biggest one was learning the correct way of referencing. I found that this was a necessary skill that I had to learn as referencing was a standard requirement in all academic papers and assessments at UTS. I found learning the referencing system very challenging because it was different to what I was used to in Colombia.

Without a doubt UTS:INSEARCH prepared me to later undertake my studies at UTS. I can confidently say that UTS:INSEARCH provided me with the necessary academic skills to smoothly transition into UTS and it also allowed me to develop and be more confident in my English speaking and writing skills.

Would you recommend UTS:INSEARCH to other people?

Yes, it’s a great place to gain the required skills to go into university as an international student. UTS:INSEARCH provides a more caring approach and I find students get a more personalised education as there is more emphasis on students as individuals.

What was your proudest moment at UTS?

My proudest moment at UTS was during the graduation ceremony where I was awarded my honours degree in Finance. To me this signified the culmination of my education - it was a four year journey where I faced and overcame big challenges as an international student. It has been extremely rewarding experience and I strongly believe that the decision to come to study in Australia was a turning point in my life. It has made me a better person and has prepared me for the coming stages of my working life.
